A Captured Moment

A captured moment. A place in time. The family have retired to their respective homes after a beautiful meal together. Both my girls with their teenage sons. How special is that? What a joy to sit around the table eating and chatting together before one arm of my family departs on the ferry for their road trip to live in Christchurch. Now delayed for a day, due to the wild winds which caused huge swells in the Strait yesterday. Hopefully, a day of down time and rest before they prepare to leave, all over again, in the morning.
Curled up on the couch, fire blazing, the house warm. How delicious. With this month’s book club book in hand, returning to that suspenseful moment where that page, that line, that chapter was left to continue. On from when the storyline was starting to be quite captivating, intriguing! The mind running ahead to the possible scenarios to come. Sleuth like considerations of who could be the one behind the plot and is the plot even as we think? The imagination runs wild as the eyes scan at a great rate across the written words, delving deeper into the characters, the storyline, the descriptive setting in New Zealand, so easy to picture.
A quick glance at the clock reveals it is past my usual time for retiring to bed, but this book, I’m not ready to put down. Not yet. Considering that I usually read in bed before putting out the light and nestling into sleep, I prepared for bed, ready for the next chapter.
We’ve all been there, haven’t we? That urgent need to read to the end. Past bedtimes, past sensible decisions, this cannot be put down until the end. We must know how it ends. Just before midnight the final line is read. Letting out a large sigh, I am very satisfied. I very much enjoyed the ending as much as the whole storyline. It was worth the late night. It was worth the intense reading and laying all aside for this capture in time.
Reflecting yet again, after a much enjoyed, fictional read, how in awe I am of a writer than create such believable and likeable characters. Who can take a spark of an idea and turn it into something so real, so compelling. The authors who take one small fact about a historical figure and can weave a magical web of a storyline that draws the reader in and takes them on a journey of suspense, of beauty, of sadness and joy. Remarkable.
Today, I am thankful for wonderful books written by amazingly talented authors who use their gifts to touch our hearts and delight our minds. Wonderful.
