Friendship, where time and distance lose their voice

Reconnection is a beautiful thing. Those old friends that you have known forever that due to distance you only get to see every now again. Isn’t it just so wonderful when you see each other face to face and it is as if you had never had a day apart? That immediate sync, like plugging into a power source where time and space have no bearing.

While there is a time of catching up on the latest news of family and friendships, the closeness is still there, the spontaneous laughter that comes so quickly and with such ease. You get each other, you always have and it feels so good to be in each other’s company.

Yesterday that privilege occurred. Friends since childhood, now distanced between oceans, meeting in Martinborough for a delightful afternoon of sincere conversation, lots of laughter, earnest listening, compassion and caring, flowing with ease between the three of us.

What a true treasure friendship is. There is no need for apologies for time or distance, or for not keeping in touch as often as we would like. Life is busy, we all have our own families, we get that. Old friends just intuitively know that it is never anything personal. We can love each other from a distance, but when we get the chance, when we make the effort to connect when it is possible, it is sheer joy, such a delight. Truly gold!

Some of the greatest blessings outside of my own family are long time friendships, old family friends, school friends, friends made when our children were young and we met as parents at school or kindergarten. That instant connection when you just know you are going to really enjoy this person.

Those friendships which are truly lifegiving, rewarding, never exhausting because they are such a joy and a delight. As Proverbs reminds us, “a dear friend will love you no matter what.”

This week I am so grateful for dear friends, for connection, for the privilege of having wonderful friends, old and new.
