Rest for the Soul

There is a bubbling up of excitement this morning at the thought of a few spontaneous days away in the caravan. Going freedom camping and coastal, lays down a foundation of anticipation and expectation of, just being. Breathing in the stunning sights of our coastal region, enjoying a few days of settled summer weather is food for the soul. My favourite book and other books, pads and pencils, paints and drawing objects, walking shoes, togs/swimmers and expectation of creative rest.

I feel close enough to touch it! The sunlight glinting off the water’s surface as we drive down to the coastal scenic way. Rugged, rocky hills on one side, an expanse of aquamarine water on the other. Sounds and smells that only the coastline can bring. A place where we have visited many times for a day’s outing, but this will be our first stay over. A long-awaited goal that we will finally experience.

Aren’t we just so blessed in this wee island nation? We are never that far from a mountain, a river or a beach and spectacular rural scenery is usually an apron string away from city or suburbs. How the scents upon the air change with the simple drive through the village, to countryside and seaside.

The recently rolled hay bales sitting idly on the flat pasture give off that sweet composting fragrance harmonising so beautifully with notes of sweet cow’s breath. Glimpses caught around a corner of the ocean in the distance brings with it a wave of joy, that on drawing closer, the sounds of the seagulls and lapping of surf are drawn into the melody. Oh, how the spirit, soul and mind respond to a restful change. An old adage comes to mind “Ah, just what the doctor ordered.”
