The Source of Joy

On a remote island far from the madding crowd lives a monk. How he got there or why he lives there is his story to tell. What is remarkable about this man and the way he lives though, and which is quite uncommon for most of us to witness, is the supreme joy that flows from him. He is not alone, there are others living on the island, a community dwells here. What is the source of his joy? What is it about him, his dwelling place and the environment he abides, which brings him this great joy.

Some say that it is because the island lacks the pressures of the world. It is not influenced by power hungry rulers, war mongerers, no reporters or press here, no demands to consume, to purchase. And yet for some, being on a seemingly deserted island would be their worst kind of hell, without the comforts we have come to enjoy.

Is this about what we have and have not, or is this something else altogether? Is it the presence or absence of things that brings us inner peace and joy? For each of us there would be a different answer, a different response. We are each uniquely and individually made. However, it is interesting to reflect where does our source of joy stem from? What makes us happy? Is our happiness determined by outward influences? Is it the weather, our friends and family, knowing we can pay our bills? Even with these outside needs met, are we truly at peace and happy?

Where does pure joy flow from? That kind of joy that is there regardless of our circumstances? For me it is knowing who I am flowing with and in, what I was created to do. Whether that be drawing, painting, writing, gardening, playing the guitar, singing; and being with people, encouraging, listening, engaging in conversation, helping people. Enjoying nature, marvelling at its beauty and its creator, brings me great joy. What brings you the greatest joy? What or who is your  source of your joy?
